Leverage the Experience of Seasoned Administrators
VAVA's administrators have extensive experience in serving public and private enterprise. Together, they provide a strong backbone for the day-to-day operations of the Virginia Virtual Academy.
Suzanne Sloane, Head of School Suzanne Sloane has worked at K12, Inc since 2001 in Product Development, Evaluation and Research, Academic Services, Enrollment/Placement and School Management. Suzanne opened the Virginia Virtual Academy in its inaugural year, 2009. She was an award winning Virginia public school teacher and has been involved in education in the state of Virginia for more than 25 years. Suzanne has met with our Governors, members of the state board of education, legislators and other leaders along with her students and families to encourage the expansion of online learning opportunities across the Commonwealth for all children who wish to have school choice. Suzanne is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and holds a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Virginia. Suzanne was elected to the Fauquier County School Board in 2016. She is married to the Head of School for Friendship Public Charter School Online in Washington DC, has two sons in Fauquier County high school, and a German shepherd, named Blue.
Erin Rubinstein, Academic Administrator Erin Rubinstein initially joined the VAVA team as a teacher in June 2011 and is thrilled to return in the role of Academic Administrator. She holds a M.Ed. in Secondary and Transition Special Education and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Special Education both from the University of Maryland, College Park and is additionally certified in Middle School Language Arts. Before joining K12, Inc. as a special educator at VAVA and CAPCS Online, she taught math and English as a special education teacher in a large public school system in Maryland. She has also served as an admissions committee member and academic advisor in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park. She previously worked with pre-school-aged children at a Montessori school and as a counselor at a therapeutic camp for students with emotional and behavioral needs. In addition, she enjoyed working as a math tutor and basketball coach. Mrs. Rubinstein and her husband, a high school history teacher, have a two-year-old daughter.
Joyce Voelker, Family Outreach and School Support Liaison Joyce Voelker joined the VAVA teaching staff in July of 2010. Beginning in July of 2011 she took on the role of Family Outreach and School Support Liaison for VAVA and CAPCS-Online. She has previously worked with Bedford County's Virtual Academy for two years. Joyce earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from St. Francis University and a Master's Degree in Special Education as well as her State Certification in Administration and Supervision through the Educational Leadership program from George Mason University. Joyce has taught for twenty four years and was an elementary administrator in Prince William County Public Schools for fifteen years. She also served for seven years as an adjunct professor in the Military Career Transitions Program at Marine Base Quantico. She is excited about the challenging and engaging curriculum and is passionate about the value VAVA holds for its wonderful families.
Lindsay Woods, Operations Manager Lindsay Woods brings a unique perspective to her role as Operations Manager for the Virginia Virtual Academy. Lindsay moved into Operations after teaching with Virginia Virtual Academy for three years. Prior to that, she worked for Arizona Virtual Academy, and has been with K12 since 2008. Lindsay was nominated as the iNACOL National Online Teacher of the Year for 2011 and was chosen as the Virginia state winner for the 2012 National Coalition for Public School Options (NCPSO) American Pioneer of Teaching Award. Lindsay is excited to partner with the staff and families at Virginia Virtual Academy to help each child have a successful and enjoyable learning experience.
