Leverage the Experience of Seasoned Administrators

VAVA's administrators have extensive experience in serving public and private enterprise. Together, they provide a strong backbone for the day-to-day operations of the Virginia Virtual Academy.

Suzanne Sloane, Head of School Suzanne Sloane has worked at K12, Inc since 2001 in Product Development, Evaluation and Research, Academic Services, Enrollment/Placement and School Management. Suzanne opened the Virginia Virtual Academy in its inaugural year, 2009. She was an award winning Virginia public school teacher and has been involved in education in the state of Virginia for more than 25 years. Suzanne has met with our Governors, members of the state board of education, legislators and other leaders along with her students and families to encourage the expansion of online learning opportunities across the Commonwealth for all children who wish to have school choice. Suzanne is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and holds a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Virginia. Suzanne was elected to the Fauquier County School Board in 2016.  She is married to the Head of School for Friendship Public Charter School Online in Washington DC, has two sons in Fauquier County high school, and a German shepherd, named Blue.

Joyce Voelker, Family and Staff Support Liaison Joyce Voelker joined the VAVA teaching staff in July of 2010. Beginning in July of 2011 she took on the role of Family Outreach and School Support Liaison for VAVA and CAPCS-Online. She has previously worked with Bedford County's Virtual Academy for two years. Joyce earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from St. Francis University and a Master's Degree in Special Education as well as her State Certification in Administration and Supervision through the Educational Leadership program from George Mason University. Joyce has taught for twenty four years and was an elementary administrator in Prince William County Public Schools for fifteen years. She also served for seven years as an adjunct professor in the Military Career Transitions Program at Marine Base Quantico. She is excited about the challenging and engaging curriculum and is passionate about the value VAVA holds for its wonderful families.

Deanna Swortzel, K-5 Academic Administrator Deanna Swortzel joined the VAVA team in July 2014 as a K-1 teacher and is excited to be the Academic Administrator for our K-5 students again this school year.  She comes with a variety of background experience including teaching 1st and 4th grades, community organizing and working as a gifted specialist teaching students in kindergarten through 12th grade.  She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Radford University.  She also holds a gifted endorsement and has a passion for working with high-ability students.  Deanna lives in Southwest Virginia with her husband Brian and four sons, Kaiden, Rylan, Gavin, and Kavlan. She enjoys being outside and watching her boys play sports.

Katie Poindexter, Middle School Academic Administrator Katie Poindexter has been with VAVA since July 2011. Previously, Katie was an English teacher in Prince William County for 6 years. Katie graduated from George Mason University in 2005 with a Bachelor's degree in English. In 2006 she received a Masters of Science in Education from Old Dominion University and in 2016 received a Masters of Educational Leadership from George Mason University. Katie lives in Warrenton, VA with her husband and three children Tyler, Zachary and Ashlynn. Katie loves working with students and learning coaches and is honored to lead the VAVA Middle School Team.

Kenny Moles, High School Academic Administrator Dr. Moles joined the Virginia Virtual team in August 2017 as the academic administrator for our high school.  Kenny earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Concord University in Athens, WV.  He completed his graduate work at Virginia Tech, earning both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership.  Kenny has fifteen years of administrative experience at encompassing all programmatic levels of K-12 education.  Those experiences involve service in Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina, including work at the West Virginia Department of Education.  He was a high school social studies teacher prior to entering administration.  Kenny is married to Sara Moles, a kindergarten teacher for Virginia Virtual Academy.  Together they have three children, Madilyn, Kent, and Josiah.  Their weekends are spent enjoying the events their kids are passionate about and spending quality time together as a family.

Christine Taylor, Special Programs Manager Christine Taylor joined the VAVA team in August 2014.  Before joining K12, Inc., Christine spent many years as a Fairfax County Public School teacher.  She spent most of that time teaching English and Reading, but also gained experience in Science and all elementary content.  Christine earned a Bachelor's of Arts from Virginia Tech and holds a Master's in Special Education from George Mason University.  She resides in Northern Virginia with her husband, children, and dogs.  In her time away from work, Christine enjoys traveling, completing home projects, and gardening.  Christine looks forward to assisting families with any special needs and is happy to answer questions about special programs.   

Lindsay Woods, Operations Manager Lindsay Woods brings a unique perspective to her role as Operations Manager for the Virginia Virtual Academy. Lindsay moved into Operations after teaching with Virginia Virtual Academy for three years. Prior to that, she worked for Arizona Virtual Academy, and has been with K12 since 2008. Lindsay was nominated as the iNACOL National Online Teacher of the Year for 2011 and was chosen as the Virginia state winner for the 2012 National Coalition for Public School Options (NCPSO) American Pioneer of Teaching Award. Lindsay is excited to partner with the staff and families at Virginia Virtual Academy to help each child have a successful and enjoyable learning experience.

Jennifer Trotter, Family Engagement Coordinator Supervisor & FASTeam Lead Jennifer Trotter joined the VAVA team in August 2011 as a K–4 teacher and is currently the Family Engagement Supervisor.  She earned a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master of Science in Reading from Radford University. Jennifer is also a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Childhood Education (Pre K – 3).  She has 13 years of teaching experience in a variety of elementary grade levels and has taught as an adjunct professor in the education department at Radford University.  She lives in Southwest VA with her husband, Tommy,  and two children, Tatum and Tyson.  She thoroughly enjoys working with VAVA students and families and helping them along their educational journey.
