Monthly Service Opportunity

K12 Care for Your Community Campaign provides students a monthly opportunity to participate in local Community Service Projects.  Students benefit by learning the importance of serving in the community and partnering with local charities.  Check out our monthly service opportunities below to learn how to get involved and see the amazing work Virginia Virtual Academy students are doing.

Back to School Supply Drive

AUGUST – Back to School (B2S) Supply Drive

This fall thousands of children will go back to school without the supplies they need. You can help!

Project Description

Through the Back to School (B2S) Supply Drive, you can help students in need in your local community. Fill a backpack with standard school supplies or organize a school supply drive and donate at a Salvation Army drop-off site.

  1. Collect and donate back to school supplies, such as pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, backpacks, etc. You can drop them off at your local Salvation Army or schedule a free pickup.
  2. Purchase a Care for Your Community backpack to keep or fill and donate. Sale proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army.
  3. Care for Your Community Backpack
  4. Take photos of you with your donation items and share them on your school Facebook page by August 31.
  5. Be sure to tell us about your efforts by completing the Community Service Survey!

Description: Do you live in or around Northern Virginia and want to show your community some love?  Join Virginia Virtual Academy for K12 Cares August Community Service Project School Supply Drive at Northern Virginia Family Service office in the Sully Place Shopping Center (that is to the left of PetSmart).

There are two ways families can participate. The first way to participate is by donating school supplies and attending the event on 8/7. The second way to participate is by volunteer support for one of the select days listed here. Don’t wait, spots are filling quickly.

Option 1 - Donate School Supplies & Attend 8/7 Event

Event Schedule

  • 11:00am Families meet in the front of the Northern Virginia Family Service office to the left of PetSmart. Families will be met by Randy Bretza from K12 who will be located outside wearing a lime green Polo. (Please do not enter the store or block the doorway.)
  • 11:30am School Group Photo with School Supply Donations

You're invited to participate in our school donation by gathering school supplies. This is a wonderful opportunity for you, individually or as part of a group, to show support for local families in need.

Cost: No Admission Cost and Parking is Free 

Bring school supplies for those in need and most importantly socialize and make connections with our VAVA community.

  • Students, make friends with other VAVA students
  • Parents, learn how you can organize or participate in study buddy groups
  • Have fun AND stay cool!

Who?
Enrolled and prospective students, siblings, family members are welcome to attend. Parents will remain with their children for the duration of the outing.

About the Drive: Each year, NVFS seeks to help low-income kids in Northern Virginia start their school year off strong!  NVFS’ Back-to-School drive provides kids and teens across Northern Virginia with backpacks filled with the school supplies that their grade-level and county require. They will pack and distribute over 2,000 backpacks this year!  A lot of volunteer support is required to make this event happen.

Option 2 - Volunteer Support

Note: All volunteers must be at least 12 years old and volunteers ages 12-15 must volunteer alongside a parent or guardian. 

Dates: 8/2, 8/6, 8/7, 8/8, 8/13, 8/14, 8/15, 8/16, 8/17 (Don’t wait, spots are filling quickly.)

Times: Each day has an AM and PM shift (times vary by day)

Location: Sully Place Shopping Center (the Northern Virginia Family Service office to the left of Petsmart)

Volunteer Duties: Volunteers will help to receive donations, sort donations, count inventory, pack backpacks and assist with distribution.

July is Parks and Recreation Month. This year's theme is Parks and Recreation: A Lifetime of Discovery. The National Recreation and Park Association is challenging everyone to explore the "undiscovered" power of parks!

Together, let's celebrate the unique role parks play in our communities!

Project Description

  1. Join as at an organized group event below, or individually partner with your community park to clean up litter, plant flowers, or remove invasive plants.

JUNE – Join the Fight Against Childhood Cancer

Help change the lives of children with cancer, raise awareness, and empower others to help find a cure by partnering—alone or as a group—with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Project Description

Set Up a Lemonade Stand

Be part of a national movement to fight childhood cancer—one cup at a time!  Visit the foundation's website for all the details.

  1. Choose your location, date and time, and register your Alex’s Lemonade Stand. (We encourage children to participate every step of the way, they will just need an adult to help them register.)
  2. You can choose to have an event kit mailed to you and you’ll get a personal event coach from Alex’s Lemonade Stand to help answer your questions.
  3. Take photos of your lemonade stand and share them on your school Facebook page by June 30.
  4. Be sure to tell us about your efforts by completing the Community Service Survey!

Pinwheels for Prevention

April- Pinwheels for Prevention®

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and we invite you to show your support for our nation's children by making your own pinwheel display!

Pinwheels are the national symbol of child abuse prevention and a visible reminder of the happy and healthy childhood that all children deserve.

Project Description

Make or purchase inexpensive pinwheels and create a pinwheel garden in your yard or at a local business (with permission). Or you can make a Pinwheels for Prevention poster to display on your front porch or window, and be sure to include your school's name!

MARCH – Read Across America Book Drive

March Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.   

Project Description

Option 1:  Book Donation

  • Share your love of reading by donating gently used books to the local library.

Option 2:  Volunteer

  • Volunteer to read a favorite book at a local library or bookstore story time or to a senior at a local assisted living facility.

FEBRUARY – Love a Charity

February is a great time to show your favorite charities some love by making an extra contribution or volunteering your time and talent.

Project Description

Option 1:  Spread Love with Valentine’s

  • Make and deliver Valentine cards and spread love to those needing it the most.
  • Senior Citizens in Assisted Living or Nursing Home Facility
  • Patients at the Local Children’s Hospital
  • Fire Fighters, Police Officers, or EMT’s in the Local Community

Events

Do you live in or around the Falls Church area and want to show your community some love?  Stop by Ronald McDonald House to make (or sign) a Thank You card for a local hero, a child at Inova Children's Hospital, or military member.  Join Virginia Virtual Academy in the conference room between noon and 1 p.m..  We'd love to see you.  All are welcome so bring a friend!  FREE while supplies last.
