We are fortunate to have so many gifted educators that work for the betterment of our students. Meet Christine Taylor, the Special Programs Academic Administrator for Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA).

The Special Education Journey

Ms. Taylor has spent her career working with special education students. She found that she loved the opportunity to connect on a deeper level with her students, but also how the clerical aspects of special education classrooms make direct impacts on students and their progress.

After ten years in the classroom Ms. Taylor found Virginia Virtual Academy where she became a special education teacher for the elementary school. Rapid growth within the school, and her love of logistics, led to her current leadership role. She now oversees 25 special education teachers who work with kindergarten through twelfth grade students.

“I am very lucky to work with amazing people who are motivated to do what’s right for the students. My focus is to streamline processes so we can keep quality teachers and make those teachers’ jobs easier.”

Virtual Education = Special Education

Virtual education provides different opportunities for students who may need additional support. According to Ms. Taylor, the virtual learning environment is more adaptable for students and features reduced environmental distractions, which can be an advantage for a variety of learning styles.

“Virtual education empowers our special education students to learn at their own pace, which is especially beneficial for middle and high school students who may be struggling. Less anxiety and anonymity when receiving special ed support reduces the stigma and makes the learning process enjoyable for everyone.”

Thank you, Ms. Taylor – and the entire special education team – for making our students feel safe, seen and understood, and providing an experience tailored to meet the needs of all students.
