From Bullied to Thriving: How Virtual Learning Helped Remy Find Confidence, Friendship, and Academic Success

Stories & Spotlights

At Virginia Virtual Academy, we believe that every student deserves a safe and supportive space to learn, grow, and discover who they are. For seventh grade student Remy, that journey started in Fall 2024 when he made the switch to VAVA after a difficult experience in his previous school.

A Fresh Start After Bullying

Before joining VAVA, Remy struggled with bullying on the school bus and in the classroom. Despite being a bright and gifted learner, the bullying took a toll on Remy’s confidence and academic performance.

“At my old school, kids said I wasn’t smart,” Remy shared. “I had Cs and Ds, and I didn’t feel good about myself.”

His mom, Schyler, added, “The bullying got to a point where we, as parents, couldn’t keep knowingly putting our child in that situation.”

That’s when the family turned to virtual learning.

Finding His Stride at VAVA

Since enrolling at VAVA, Remy’s world has opened in more ways than one. With the flexibility of learning at his own pace, Remy now has straight As and was recently inducted into the National Junior Honor Society!

Remy has also found the time and confidence to explore new interests, like acting. He not only discovered a new passion, but he has also made a best friend along the way.

“Acting has helped me come out of my shell,” Remy says. “And I’ve even made friends through it!”

A Safe Space to Grow

For Remy, VAVA has provided more than just academic support, it has created an environment where he feels safe and genuinely excited to learn

He now enjoys taking morning walks with his family, is more outgoing, and approaches each school day with confidence and curiosity.
