In the News: How School Choice Changed the Life of a VAVA Student

At Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA), we are proud of the incredible stories of transformation and success that come from the flexibility of online learning. During National School Choice Week, WSLS 10 in Roanoke shared the inspiring journey of one of our own students, Aleah, whose life has been dramatically changed by the option to choose a school that best suited her needs. 

A Struggle in the Traditional School Environment 

In 2023, Aleah found herself struggling in the traditional school system. Faced with a serious mental health crisis that ultimately led to a hospitalization, Aleah was at a crossroads. Her mother, Carolyn, deeply concerned about her well-being, knew that a change was needed. That’s when they found VAVA. 

A New Beginning at VAVA 

Aleah’s experience at VAVA has provided the flexibility and safe environment she needed to prioritize her health and well-being while continuing her education. As Aleah’s mother shares, “VAVA has provided not only flexibility for our family, but a safe environment where Aleah has the space to focus on her personal growth and recovery.” 

At VAVA, Aleah found the room to breathe, heal, and flourish. The supportive structure allowed her to regain her confidence, focus on her recovery, and discover her potential once again. 

From Struggle to Success: A Thriving Student 

Aleah is now a junior in high school and has made remarkable strides. She’s joined the National Honors Society, participates in both virtual and in-person activities at school, and is beginning to look ahead to her future after graduation. As Aleah so powerfully said, “I was in the biggest, deepest hole anyone ever dug for themselves. After I got out of the hospital, I didn’t know how I was going to climb out of that hole and VAVA not only gave me the ladder, but they also sent down ropes, water and a survival kit. They made sure I could climb my way out.”

Aleah’s story is a testament to the power of school choice and the life-changing impact it can have on students who need a more flexible, supportive environment. We’re proud of Aleah’s resilience and determination, and we’re honored to have been part of her journey.
