From FBI Cybercrime to Virtual Math: Meet Tom Bintz, VAVA High School Math Teacher

Stories & Spotlights

When high school math teacher Tom Bintz joined Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA) this year, he brought with him a life story unlike any other – one that weaves together mechanical engineering, service, cybercrime, digital forensics, and ultimately, a return to education. His journey is proof that students at VAVA are learning from teachers with real-world experience.

A Career Rooted in STEM – and Service

Mr. Bintz grew up in northern Kentucky and started his academic life studying mechanical engineering. But after changing paths and earning a degree in mathematics and physical sciences, he found his way into teaching. But the events on 9/11 changed the trajectory of his career.

“When 9/11 happened, I applied to become an FBI agent. I got accepted and worked in a number of different roles, but most of my career became cybercrime, cyber investigations, and digital forensics.”

He spent more than two decades with the FBI, working both in field offices and later as a supervisor and curriculum developer at the FBI’s Operational Technology Division in Quantico.

“My role was helping develop training for forensic examiners across the country. I was still teaching, still involved with technology, and still using everything I learned in my STEM background.”

Even with such a high-tech career, his love for teaching never faded.

The Path to Virtual Education

Mr. Bintz returned to the classroom last year – his first time back in that setting in over 20 years. But when he retired from federal service, an opportunity at VAVA felt like a perfect fit.

“My wife actually works at VAVA and told me about an opening. It just made sense. The flexibility, the mission, and the chance to work with students in a different way really appealed to me.”

After experiencing the classroom again, he quickly saw the advantages of virtual learning – for both teachers and students.

Finding Focus … Online

Mr. Bintz says one of the biggest differences he noticed was the classroom environment.

“Classroom management had become tough. Students have changed in the last 20 years and at VAVA, I’m seeing much more engagement.”

With fewer distractions and more one-on-one interactions, he’s able to focus on what matters most: his students’ understanding and progress.

“If a student isn’t engaged, I can easily redirect without disrupting everyone. It allows class to stay focused. Engagement is still on the teacher, but the environment supports it.”

Supporting and Empowering Students Virtually

Many of Mr. Bintz’s students choose VAVA for its structure and supportive environment. And he sees firsthand how virtual learning empowers them.

“We have student athletes traveling for national competitions. We have students who struggled in traditional schools or needed a fresh start. We have families who move a lot or need flexibility, like military families. Online school meets all those needs.”

His own family experienced using virtual school during a period of change helps him appreciate how important that option is for families.

Building a New STEM Club for VAVA

With his extensive STEM background – including time studying engineering, serving in the Navy, and working in cyber forensics – Mr. Bintz is helping launch VAVA’s new STEM Club.

“STEM really is all-encompassing. We want to bring in guest speakers, explore hands-on projects, and help students connect with people in fields they want to pursue.”

“My interests might become theirs, and their interests might become mine. That’s what makes STEM exciting.”

From coding to 3D printing to engineering concepts, Mr. Bintz is excited to share a broad range of experiences with his students and help them see the real-world relevance of the math and science they’re learning.

Advice for Families Considering Online Learning

Mr. Bintz believes students and parents thrive in virtual school when they approach it with commitment and communication.

“Students need motivation. It’s easy to succeed here when you log in and are prepared to learn. You don’t have to worry about transportation or what you’re wearing – but you do have to show up.”

He adds that parent involvement still matters just as much as it does in any school setting.

“Parents just need to stay engaged and communicate. Teachers will do the same. The more we all connect, the more students benefit.”

And for educators considering virtual teaching?

“Engage with your students as much as possible. Call them, message them, and talk to them in class. The more you engage, the more they get out of it, and honestly, the more you do too.”
