Rediscovering Teaching – and Balance: Science Teacher Finds the Best of Both Worlds at VAVA
After a decade of teaching in Spotsylvania County, Ms. Hornstein stepped away from the classroom to focus on raising her children. But during that time away, she knew one thing was for sure: teaching was a part of who she was.
Today, as a seventh-grade life science teacher at Virginia Virtual Academy, Ms. Hornstein has found her way back to the classroom in a way that allows her to do the work she loves while maintaining the balance she needs.
Finding a Path Back to Teaching
When Ms. Hornstein decided it was time to return to education, she knew she was looking for something different.
“I was ready to get back into teaching,” she said. “I wanted that identity again, but I also needed a work-life balance. I didn’t want a job that kept me in a school building all day.”
Virtual learning offered a solution she hadn’t previously imagined.
“Being with VAVA has allowed me the balance I was looking for,” she said. “I get to feel fulfilled professionally, connect with students, and still be present for my family. It really is the best of both worlds.”
Discovering Her Passion – Teaching Middle School Science
Ms. Hornstein’s love for science has been with her for as long as she can remember. And while some educators shy away from middle school, Ms. Hornstein thrives in it.
“They’re still excited to learn,” she said. “They want relationships with their teachers. They act like they’re too cool for school, but they’re not, and I love reminding them of that.”
She sees middle school as a crucial time when students are learning not just content, but who they are.
“I love helping them see how science connects to their everyday lives,” she said. “Even at 13 or 14, what they’re learning matters, and I want them to understand why.”
Creating Space for Girls in STEM
Ms. Hornstein has also noticed how the virtual environment can positively shape student participation, especially for girls in science.
“I would venture to guess that I have more girls speaking up, more girls participating, and more girls leading discussions,” she said. “I think being online removes some of the intimidation they might feel in a physical classroom.”
She believes the virtual setting allows students to take academic risks and find their voices more comfortably.
“They’re more willing to answer questions and share ideas,” she said. “It changes the dynamic in a really positive way.”
Finding Her Place – and Helping Students Find Theirs
For Ms. Hornstein, joining VAVA wasn’t just about returning to work – it was about rediscovering her sense of purpose.
“I needed to feel that again,” she said. “Teaching is something I truly love. Being able to do it with balance, supportive colleagues, and students I genuinely connect with is everything I hoped for.”
Each day, she brings enthusiasm, compassion, and a deep love of science into her virtual classroom, helping seventh graders navigate academic concepts at a very important stage of their lives.
