How Hollace Finds Her Rhythm at Virginia Virtual Academy

Student Spotlight: Hollace Finds Her Rhythm

For Hollace, a 10th grader at Virginia Virtual Academy, virtual learning is more than a convenient option – it is the foundation that allows her to fully pursue both academics and her passions. After starting online learning during COVID, Hollace realized she thrived in a flexible environment where she could move through lessons at her own pace and avoid the downtime that can come with traditional classrooms.

“I can just work at my own pace and get stuff done,” she shared. That flexibility has made it easier to balance a busy schedule filled with music, gymnastics, and additional academic opportunities – all while staying connected with teachers and classmates through live instruction and school clubs, including the student newspaper.

From Piano to Prize-Winning Fiddle

Hollace’s musical journey began early. She started playing piano at age four, but later discovered her true love: the fiddle. After switching to a teacher focused on bluegrass, she quickly found her groove and began attending festivals, jamming with other musicians, and building lasting friendships within the music community.

Today, Hollace performs with a youth band called Denim & Plaid and also plays with an adult group. Her performances have taken her to events and festivals across the region -including well-known gatherings such as the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention and the SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America) Convention. She looks forward to her band performing at MerleFest, one of the most celebrated bluegrass festivals in the country.

This year, Hollace earned an impressive first-place finish in the adult bluegrass category at Galax – a remarkable accomplishment for a student still in high school.

Balancing School, Gymnastics and Creativity

Music is only one part of Hollace’s packed schedule. She also trains in gymnastics about ten hours each week and recently tied for first place in her age group at a competition. In her free time, she enjoys crafting and crocheting.

Managing so many commitments has helped her develop strong time-management and planning skills.

“I have to think about how much time school is going to take me, and then what I want to do with the time I have left,” she explained. That mindset helps her stay organized while still making room for the activities she loves most.

Exploring Science and Looking Ahead

Alongside her core classes, Hollace participates in a state-level online science enrichment program that she hopes will lead to a summer experience at Wallops Island. She is also currently enrolled in AP Environmental Science – her favorite class – taught by her favorite teacher, Ms. Pogue.

Hollace plans to attend college and hopes music will always remain part of her life, even if it is not her full-time career. With her talent, drive, and the flexibility offered through Virginia Virtual Academy, she is already composing a future filled with opportunity – and plenty of bluegrass along the way.
