Teacher Spotlight: Alicia Wray

Virginia Virtual Academy is so fortunate to have some of the most talented educators in the state. Meet Alicia Wray, a Literacy Coach and K-5 Reading Interventionist with VAVA.
Starting a new chapter
Alicia started teaching in a fourth-grade classroom, and soon after became a student intervention specialist. After working in local schools for five years, Alicia sought a change after learning she would be having her first daughter and wanting a more work-life balance for her family. She discovered Virginia Virtual Academy, applied for a position, and the next chapter in her teaching career began.
“Working with VAVA has made the biggest impact on my life. I not only have flexibility, but I’m doing something I really love,” said Alicia. “During COVID, I got my reading specialist certification, and I’ve found a renewed passion for education.”
Sharing A Passion for Reading
Alicia has been working with VAVA for the past 3 years and recently transitioned into the literacy coach role. She works with fourth and fifth grade students, specifically struggling readers and those who are below grade level with their reading skills.
“Reading is the most important thing our kids learn – it’s the foundation for everything,” Alicia says. “Making sure kids can not only read at a basic level but truly comprehend what they’re reading is vital.”
Watching it “click” for kids is what Alicia loves most, but she’s also passionate about assisting new teachers as they educate Virginia’s next generation.
