Skating With Heart: How Sofia Finds Purpose and Balance on the Ice

Stories & Spotlights

At just 15-years-old, Sofia, a junior at Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA), has already built an impressive figure skating résumé – one shaped by dedication and a deep love for the sport. Living in Springfield and training at SkateQuest in Reston, Sofia balances the demanding schedule of a competitive skater with her academic responsibilities through VAVA’s virtual learning environment.

Sofia’s skating journey began almost as soon as she could walk. After stepping on the ice at just three-years-old, she was hooked. What drew her in wasn’t only the sport itself, but the feeling it gave her – the speed, the challenge, and the constant push to improve.

“I loved going fast, landing new jumps, and pushing myself to get better,” she shared.

That passion quickly turned into achievement. Over the years, Sofia has earned titles as a regional and sectional champion, placed on the podium at sectionals, and captured the 2022 Juvenile National Championship – an impressive list for a high school student.

Her daily routine would be a challenge for most adults. Sofia practices five days a week, skating multiple sessions a day and often spending six or more hours at the rink. Between ice time, off-ice conditioning, and dance training, her schedule leaves little room for traditional schooling – which is where VAVA makes all the difference.

“Virtual school lets me take my classes wherever I go,” Sofia said. “I can train, travel, and still keep up with my schoolwork.”

The schedule at VAVA has allowed Sofia to compete nationally and internationally while staying on track academically. She credits her teachers for being understanding and supportive, especially when her training and competition schedule becomes intense. Knowing she has that support allows her to stay focused both on the ice and in the classroom.

Recently, Sofia reached a major milestone at a national competition, skating a personal best in a performance that carried deep personal meaning. She honored the life of a friend and fellow skater, who was tragically killed last year, by performing her routine. The routine reflected not only her technical growth, but also her emotional strength and ability to skate with intention and heart. You can view her championship performance here: Instagram

“Skating helps me express things I can’t always put into words,” she said. “When I’m on the ice, I feel focused, strong, and connected to why I love this sport.”

Sofia dreams of competing at the Olympic level (watch out 2030 Olympics) and hopes to stay involved in skating long-term, possibly as a coach. No matter where her path leads, she plans to carry forward the lessons skating has taught her – perseverance, discipline, and purpose.
