Eligibility Requirements

According to Virginia school division partner guidelines, applicants for Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA) must meet the following criteria.

Please note: The Virginia Department of Education is not able to provide SOL scores, please contact your local school system for previous scores. 

Virginia Virtual Academy is a program of multiple public-school divisions throughout Virginia. Eligibility is determined only after reviewing the student’s educational records. The following is a list of requirements and records needed for potential enrollment:

Kindergarten must be five years old by September 30 of the upcoming school year.

Grades 1–9 must submit their most recent report card.


Grades 3–8 must submit their most recent report card.


Grades 10 and 11 must submit their most recent transcript.

  • Students having spent any time in a Virginia public high school must submit a transcript for that period.
  • Home Instruction students must show evidence of progress as mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. The parent who elects to provide home instruction shall submit evidence of the child’s academic progress with:
    • The most recent home-school report card;
    • Evidence that the child has attained a composite score in or above the fourth stanine on any nationally normed standardized achievement test; or an equivalent score on the ACT, SAT, or PSAT test; or
    • An evaluation or assessment to indicate the child is achieving an adequate level of educational growth and progress, including but not limited to:
      • An evaluation letter from a person licensed to teach in any state, or a person with a master’s degree or higher in an academic discipline, having knowledge of the child’s academic progress, stating that the child is achieving an adequate level of educational growth and progress; or
      • A report card or transcript from a community college or college, college distance learning program, or home-education correspondence school.
  • Private schooled students must submit their most recent transcript and report card.

Grade 12 must submit their final 11th-grade transcript indicating each of the following:

  • Completed a minimum of 16 units of high school credit
  • Earned a minimum of nine credit hours in core course (English, math, social studies, science)
  • Earned a minimum of one verified credit in each of the core subject areas (math, science, social studies, reading, writing)
  • Shows ability to meet all remaining graduation requirements in the 12th grade year as determined by a VAVA high school counselor

Acceptable standardized tests:

  • Computer Adaptive Test (SOL-CAT)
  • SOL Virtual Alternative Assessment Option
  • Iowa Basic (ITBS)
  • Stanford 10 (online versions are not acceptable)
  • Woodcock Johnson
  • NWEA (must show it was proctored and provide reading and math data)
  • Standardized test results from states other than Virginia 

Parents, please do not contact the Virginia Department of Education for SOL scores or to inquire about taking an SOL. The VDOE cannot help with this requirement. Please contact your local school system IF you have ever been enrolled there or administer one of the tests listed above.

All tests administered outside of a testing facility must be administered by a state certified teacher. Copy of the proctor’s teaching license and letter verifying that student took the test independently is required.

Students with a history of out-of-school suspension or expulsion and those who are more than two years behind the grade indicated by their age require administrative approval for acceptance.
