Eligibility Requirements

According to Virginia school division partner guidelines, applicants for Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA) must meet the following criteria.

Applicants for

Kindergarten must be five years old by September 30 of the upcoming school year.


Grades 3–8 must submit their most recent report card.

  • Report cards for grade 3 indicate on-or above-grade-level reading proficiency.

Grades 4–5 must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 in core subjects and submit the results of their end-of-year assessments that show on or above grade level proficiency in Reading and Math.


Grades 6–12 must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in core subjects and submit the results of their end-of-year assessments that show on or above grade level proficiency in Reading and Math.


Grade 9 must submit their end-of-year report card from 8th-grade indicating each of the following:

  • End-of-year assessments (SOLs for Virginia Public School Students) indicating grade level proficiency
  • Passing grade in all core classes

Grade 10 must submit their final 9th-grade transcript indicating each of the following:

  • End-of-year assessments (SOLs for Virginia Public School students) indicating grade level proficiency. 
  • Received a minimum of 5 credits

Grade 11 must submit their final 10th-grade transcript indicating each of the following:

  • End-of-year assessments (SOLs for Virginia Public School students) indicating grade level proficiency
  • Received a minimum of 10 credits

Grade 12 must submit their final 11th-grade transcript indicating each of the following:

  • Completed a minimum of 16 units of high school credit
  • Earned a minimum of nine credit hours in core course (English, math, social studies, science)
  • Earned a minimum of one verified credit in each of the core subject areas (math, science, social studies, reading, writing)
  • Shows ability to meet all remaining graduation requirements in the 12th grade year as determined by a VAVA high school counselor 

Previous homeschool students must submit all documents and assessments typically submitted to their local school division as a registered homeschool student. For any previous out of state or private students, end of year assessments that show grade level proficiency are accepted.

Acceptable standardized tests:

  • Computer Adaptive Test (SOL-CAT)
  • SOL Virtual Alternative Assessment Option
  • Iowa Basic (ITBS)
  • Stanford 10 (online versions are not acceptable)
  • Woodcock Johnson
  • NWEA (must show it was proctored and provide reading and math data)
  • Standardized test results from states other than Virginia 

All tests administered outside of a testing facility must be administered by a state certified teacher. Copy of the proctor’s teaching license and letter verifying that student took the test independently is required.
