What is the NCAA?
The NCAA is an organization dedicated to the well-being and success of college athletes. The NCAA is composed of several member schools that award nearly $3.5 billion in athletic scholarships every year and provide vast support to help student-athletes graduate.
The NCAA consists of three divisions.
Division I
generally has the largest student body, athletics budgets, and number of athletic scholarships.
Division II
tends to focus more on academic achievement and service to the community.
Division III
maintains participation in a competitive athletics environment that still pushes academic excellence.
What does NCAA-approved mean?
NCAA schools require college-bound student-athletes to build a strong foundation of high school courses to prepare them for the academic expectations in college. VAVA is recognized by the NCAA and offers various courses that can count toward the 16 NCAA-approved courses required to become a college athlete.**
Student-athletes must also graduate from high school and earn a minimum GPA.
For more information and a listing of eligible VAVA courses, please visit the NCAA’s high school selection site and input code 852990. Further requirements for Division I, Division II, and Division III vary and can be found on the NCAA website.
*Students must maintain acceptable academic standing to participate in the flex schedule model.
**Not all courses at VAVA count as NCAA core courses. Remedial classes and classes completed through credit-by-exam are not considered NCAA core courses.
